Fullerton, Calif. – Crittenton Services for Children and Families (CSCF) is in support of the second annual #GivingTuesday. GivingTuesday is a first of its kind effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners – charities, families, businesses, and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better tomorrow.

Taking place December 3, 2013 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national movement around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.

“Crittenton believes in paying it forward and empowering all those in need, so this global movement is an idea that we can stand by,” said Martha Jasso, Director of Communications, CSCF, “We have been very fortunate to have extremely generous and kind supporters at our side for decades, and we would like to take this time to encourage those in our network who believe in the “spirit of giving” to spread the word about #GivingTuesday.”

Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group led by the 92nd Street Y in New York City, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. Thought leaders in philanthropy, social media, and grassroots organizing joined forces to spur innovations throughout the philanthropic sector.

The concept gained steam, and by bringing together a group of founding partners – including the United Nations Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, Mashable, charity:water, Global Giving, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Kiva, Darden Restaurant Group, Groupon, Unilever, and Venture Three Capital – a nationwide series of discussions about how to make #GivingTuesday a success took place.

The results for the inaugural #GivingTuesday in 2012 were impressive! According to the founders of #GivingTuesday more than 2500 partners from all 50 states recognized #GivingTuesday and it was this collective effort that helped fuel a marked increase in charitable giving on GivingTuesday.

Blackbaud processed over $10 million in online donations on November 27, 2012 – a 53 percent increase when compared to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving the previous year. DonorPerfect recorded a 46 percent increase in online donations and the average gift increased 25 percent. More than 50 million people worldwide spread the word about GivingTuesday – resulting in milestone trending on Twitter.

“#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”

As we approach December 2, 2013 CSCF would like to thank our supporters, advocates, volunteers, corporate sponsors, donors, interns and staff. We thank you for your “giving spirit” not just on GivingTuesday but on every other day you have stood by our side in support of the children and families we serve.
